Recession Begins Without Us The U.S. entered a recession in December 2007, that's right last year, according to the official recession watchers at the National Bureau of Economic Research. NBER economists met on Friday and declared the end of the expansion that began in November 2001, lasting 73 months. Economic Terrorism?
By now we all have a basic understanding of what started our financial crisis, i.e. $220 billion in sub prime and Alt-A mortgages backed securities. These mortgage backed securities impacted Wall Street, World Markets, and will be hitting Main Street. The timing, September 18, and the abruptness of the crisis raises the question of "economic terrorism". One theory is that the sharp increase in gas prices forced many of these sub prime borrowers over the edge. When gas prices more than doubled transportation to and from work doubled adding hundreds of dollars per month in expenses to an already stretched budget. The choice became buying gas or paying the mortgage became a harsh economic reality. Was this dramatic increase in the price of oil with its transfer of wealth a natural occurrence or was in manipulated? This theory deserves additional study. SBA-Backed Loans Affected The SBA reported in November that loan volumes made under its flagship 7(a) loan program fell 30% in the fiscal year ended September 30. And in October, overall SBA loan volumes were 50% lower than in October 2007, "due mainly to sharp drops in the SBA Express loan program that makes smaller loans", says Eric Zarnikow, head of the SBA's Office of Capital Access. SBA lenders and officials blame the lending decline on a number of factors, including lower demand for loans overall, tightened lending standards, and declining creditworthiness among applicants. |
