The Web is all about finding your niche. With the right focus — and the right domain (or domains) — you can find success by cornering your own specialized market.

The first step is determining your primary keyword(s). Use a free tool such as the Google® Adwords® Keyword Tool or a paid service to help you choose.

Next, pull together a list of domains. If you have the budget, purchasing multiple domains will really help secure your niche. Specifically, look at geo-targeted domains related to your keywords. For example, if your niche is plumbing, you'd want to pick up ArizonaPlumbing, AtlantaPlumbing, AnnapolisPlumbing, etc.

If you want to expand further, consider domains based on related keywords. To stick with the plumbing example, you'd want domains with “pipes”, “sinks”, “fixtures”, “bathroom remodeling”, “kitchen remodeling”, etc. Pick up anything that fits within your budget, both geo-targeted and more generalized.

Finally, build a keyword-rich, monetized site with articles that play to all your keywords and pull in all the possible keyword traffic. Each new domain you purchase ties into your primary content site and lets you continue to build out and invest in this group of keywords for maximum value.
